I’m teaching 3 art classes next semester at the Watts Atelier. Here’s a quick summary of each class. You can go to the school website to register. Classes start April 13th and run for 10 weeks.
Head Drawing Essentials
Mondays at 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
The first 5 weeks we will study the general proportions of the head, the structure of the skull, rhythms, and the planes of the head. In week 5, we will apply all this information with a live model.
The second 5 weeks of class we will focus on the individual features of the head: eyes, nose, lips and ears. Students will learn the anatomy of each feature as well as the construction by drawing from photos and casts. To finish off the semester we will have another live model in week 10.
20 Minute Figure Lay-ins
Wednesdays at 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
This class will focus on improving that first 20-minute sitting of our drawings. The first 20 minutes of any drawing are the most crucial since that is when most of the problems are solved, such as the gesture, structure, proportion, and composition. It sets the tone for the rest of the drawing.
Long Pose Head Drawing
Thursdays at 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
In the first week I will demonstrate from a model, trying to get as far as a can to a finished rendering. The remainder of the semester will be broken up into 3 drawings (3 weeks each) with demonstrations scattered throughout the semester. We will study the tools and concepts needed to take a drawing to a photo-realistic finish. This class will be heavy on likeness, rendering, volumes, values and edges.
All drawings will be rendered using graphite pencils on bristol paper.
